It's true: 2014 is nearly over! Now, it's time to look at the top four marketing trends that we expect to see in 2015.

It should be noted that digital marketing dramatically outpaced all other marketing approaches, including phone, television, radio, print, billboards and other non-digital marketing methods. So in today's article, we'll explore which digital marketing strategies are apt to be trending in 2015.

Content is (Still) King
Content-based marketing has dominated in 2014 and it's expected that this trend will continue into 2015 and beyond. According to SmartInsights.com, nearly 30% of marketers opted for content marketing in 2014, up from around 25% in 2013.

Content-based marketing is extremely effective, as it accommodates both "hard sell" and "soft sell" approaches. What's more, blog content in particular allows you to develop a readership, while establishing your authority in a particular niche. And, of course, frequent website updates with new content are essential for maintaining good search engine rankings. In addition to the cross-over that occurs with search engine marketing, a content marketing strategy can also complement a social media campaign.

App-based Marketing Solutions
In 2014, mobile marketing saw a drop in the percentage of marketers utilizing this method. It went from around 28% in 2013 to just over 15% in 2014. Mobile marketing typically refers to SMS/text messaging campaigns.

But those mobile devices are good for so much more than texting! The number of app-based marketing campaigns exploded in 2014. More and more marketers are creating customized apps that are tailored to the users' precise needs. It's a unique, brand-specific portal that enables the user to perform practical functions (e.g. booking a reservation or obtaining an answer from a company's customer support staff) and less essential functions, such as games and other features designed to entertain and engage. In fact, few marketing approaches are so engaging!

So in addition to a SMS campaign, consider launching an app as part of your 2015 marketing campaign.

Micro-Targeting Campaigns
Micro-targeting is rapidly gaining favor among marketers, with more and more companies launching marketing campaigns with hyper-precise targeting via social media and pay per click ad networks, among others.

This micro-targeting has, in large part, been made possible by changes that were launched on social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. LinkedIn now features sponsored updates and targeted ads, while Twitter offers device-specific, keyword-specific and location-specific targeting for promoted posts. Facebook also added a number of targeting options, including promoted posts and custom audiences.

So today, marketers can target a very precise niche and a very precise audience more effectively than ever before. What's more, social media popularity continues to grow, as does the usage of mobile devices (which are now used to perform a majority of social media interactions.) This means that micro-targeting strategies will become more and more commonplace in 2015!

Video Marketing
Another area to invest your marketing dollars in 2015? Video. Video continues to be among the most popular and effective marketing solutions, with YouTube maintaining it's position as the world's second largest search engine with over 3 billion search queries per month.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but one minute of video translates into 1.8 million words --- that's about 3,600 web pages. What's more, studies have revealed that 9 of 10 consumers reported that videos had a direct impact on their buying decisions. Then consider that over 100 million people view at least one video each day. Quite simply, the power of video as a marketing tool is undeniable.
