How to Write Effective, Reader-friendly Content

Do you need to write content for your website? Content writing can be a challenge, especially for those individuals who aren’t experienced writers. But the following approach can be helpful to anyone who’s uncertain of where to begin and how to go about authoring an effective piece of content.

Before you type a word, there are a few things that you’ll need to consider:

  • What’s the main point? In a sentence, write your primary message; the take-away message that you wish to convey to your readers. This will be your working title and it will serve to help you maintain a good focus as you write. You may opt to revisit the title once you’re finished, as while you’re writing, a piece of content may change in terms of its focus.
  • Who is your audience? It’s essential that you know your audience. Who are you writing for? What information do they have already and what information are they seeking? Place yourself in the position of the reader and really consider their perspective. This is also helpful as you work to come up with some preliminary keywords. Consider what keyword phrases a person may Google in order to find the content that you’re writing.

Writing Your Content: The Introduction

Once you’ve determined your audience and honed in on your main point, it’s time to get started!

Begin by writing your introduction. The introduction should engage the reader. It should provide an overview of the article and it should present your main point in a succinct, concise manner. The introduction should contain the who, what, when, where, how and why of the content.

Add Subheadings to Structure Your Content

Next, write up a few subheadings to represent the main points in your content. This will help guide your writing so you can present the main points in a logical structure.

Subheadings also make the content easier to read and skim. It also enables readers to skip ahead to the section that’s relevant for them.

Present the Problem and the Solution

In most pieces of marketing content, website content, lead capture texts and similar write-ups, you’ll want to present a problem, then explore the solution. Even informative articles can take this approach. For example, in the article you’re reading right now, we’ve discussed the problem, which surrounds your struggle to write effective content. The solution is offered up in the form of content writing instructions. At the end, we’ll present our content writing services here at Matcha Design as an alternative solution to your dilemma, followed by a call to action, encouraging you to call us if you decide that writing is a bit beyond your comfort zone.

They key component to the middle section of your content is the hook. The hook engages the audience and pulls them in. Once engaged, you’re tasked with keeping the audience’s attention by presenting information in a logical, concise manner.

Also, you don’t need to write the piece in order. So if you find it easier to start in the middle of the content or article, then start mid-stream.

Write Your Conclusion

Conclude your content by summarizing the main points and reinforcing the take-away message. In cases of marketing content, this is where you’ll place your call to action — a message that encourages the reader to take some sort of action, such as entering an email address to sign up for a subscription or making a purchase.
