Have you ever scrolled through your Instagram feed, looked at a filtered photo, and thought, “I wish this was a movie”? Well, your wish has finally come true. On Thursday, June 20th, Instagram announced its new update featuring its fifteen second video capabilities and thirteen new video filters to go along with it.
This new addition has put Instagram in competition with Twitter’s popular video-sharing app, Vine. The co-founder of Instagram, Kevin Systrom shared his hope for its users and how they will put video to action.
“We’re excited to see what the community will bring to video, whether it’s your local cafe showing you just how they made your latte art this morning or an Instagrammer on the other side of the world taking you on a tour of their city, a mother sharing her joys in parenting as her children laugh and play or your favorite athlete taking you behind the scenes.”
Adding video to Instagram has the potential to open up many doors. It will help endorse the often forgotten video side of Facebook and will bring a whole new side to social media marketing. Companies can use it as a way to make mini commercials or get their customers to show off and promote their products more efficiently with the use of hashtags.
The new update comes along with the limitation of only using videos shot through Instagram. This means any videos previously shot before the change can not be used. Much like the photos, the videos posted will be cropped to the app’s signature square. Shooting a square video takes a special skill and keen eye which greatly differs from professional video shoots.
